Make My Phone a Happy Place: A Gentle Guide to Better Digital Wellbeing

Writer: Jane WatkinsJane Watkins

Have you ever picked up your phone for “just a second” and suddenly found yourself lost in an endless scroll? Has it made you happy or been a 'doom scroll'? Or maybe you’ve noticed that your screen time leaves you feeling more drained than inspired? Do you feel that your digital wellbeing is not all it could be?

Creating digital wellbeing on your phone

If so, you’re not alone. Our phones have become central to our daily lives, but they don’t always bring us joy. That’s why I started Make My Phone a Happy Place, a project dedicated to helping people create a healthier, more intentional relationship with their screens.

Why Does Digital Wellbeing Matter?

Our phones can be incredible tools. They connect us, inform us, and even comfort us. But they can also overwhelm us, increase anxiety, and steal time from the things that truly matter. The goal of Make My Phone a Happy Place is not to get rid of our phones, but to reclaim them as spaces that support our well-being rather than diminish it.

Small Changes, Big Impact

The good news? You don’t need to do a digital detox or throw your phone in a drawer to feel better. Simple, mindful changes can make a world of difference. Here are a few strategies we explore in this project:

  • Curate Your Feed with Care – How to create a welcoming and happy feed on social media. Follow accounts that uplift and inspire you, and don’t hesitate to mute or unfollow anything that adds stress or comparison to your life.

  • Declutter Your Apps – Keep only what adds value to your day. If an app drains you more than it serves you, consider whether it truly deserves space on your phone and other ideas about app management.

  • Set Gentle Boundaries – Small shifts, like charging your phone outside the bedroom or scheduling “phone-free” moments, can help you feel more present and in control. There are many other ideas over at my Self Esteem Library and Hub about this.

  • Use Tech to Support Your Mental Health – Mindfulness apps, focus timers, and soothing playlists can transform your phone into a tool for calm rather than chaos.

  • Understand the Psychology behind phone use - understand why we get hooked!

Join the Journey

Make My Phone a Happy Place is more than just a concept—it’s a journey we take together. I share insights, challenges, and gentle prompts to help you reimagine your digital space in a way that nurtures rather than drains you. If you’re ready to bring more peace and joy into your screen time, I’d love for you to join me.

You deserve a phone that feels like a cosy, supportive space—not a source of stress. Let’s build that together. 💛
